The Department of Clinical Ethics at the University Hospital Basel (USB) supports employees, patients and relatives in clarifying and making decisions on difficult ethical issues and conflicts.
The Clinical Ethics Department is committed to strengthening central ethical values such as respect for individual self-determination, beneficence, protection, confidentiality and justice at the USB and associated institutions and to addressing ethical issues openly and as early as possible.
In this way, it makes a key contribution to achieving the best medical results with a high level of patient and employee satisfaction.
Forms of ethical support
As an employee, patient or family member of a patient at the USB, the following forms of ethical support are available to you via the Clinical Ethics department:
- Ethics consultation (prospective / retrospective)
Structured support for interprofessional decision-making for those treating or affected by ethical problems in patient care.
- Ethical consultation (ad hoc / planned)
Confidential discussion with one or more staff members or affected persons regarding the moral perception of a problem.
- Ethics visit
Participation in team meetings or ward rounds with feedback on ethical aspects of clinical practice (early detection of ethical problems or screening of recurring ethical issues)
- Ethical training and continuing education
Courses to develop ethical skills for teams or groups.
- Working groups
Support or coordination of working groups for the development of ethically relevant documents, e.g. ethical guidelines.
- USB ethics group
Interprofessional group of ethically interested USB employees who meet over lunchtime as required to discuss ethical issues relevant to the USB(USB ethics group concept).
- Special projects
Support or scientific evaluation of ethically relevant projects or processes in the clinic, e.g. on topics such as Shared Decision Making or Advance Care Planning.
Process for inquiries and ethics support
- Request ethics support via contact form, telephone(+41 61 328 44 88), e-mail(ethik@usb.ch) or ISMed consultation order (Clinical Ethics). For employees, consultation with the line manager is generally advisable.
- Organization of the meeting in consultation with the Clinical Ethics Department. The patient or deputy, if applicable, must generally be informed.
- Implementation
- Acceptance of the minutes. Amendment request possible within one week of receipt. Documentation and dispatch is carried out by the Clinical Ethics Department.
- Feedback by means of a feedback form

Clinical Ethics Committee USB
The Clinical Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Basel (KLINEK USB) is an interdisciplinary, independent body that supports the USB in an advisory capacity on clinical-ethical issues and proposes suitable measures.The KLINEK USB is made up of members from various professions working at the USB (doctors, nursing, legal services, spiritual care, social services) as well as a patient representative and a liaison person from the KLINEK of the University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK).
The organization and tasks of the KLINEK USB are defined in the KLINEK USB regulations approved by the hospital management on 24.08.2020.
