In healthy people, the kidneys filter the metabolic products from the blood. Urine is produced, which is excreted via the bladder. If the kidneys are no longer able to do this, the blood must be purified artificially. There are two kidney replacement procedures for this.

In hemodialysis, the blood is mechanically purified outside the body using a special filter.

This form of dialysis is technically known as peritoneal dialysis. In this case, the blood is purified through the peritoneum, which is well supplied with blood, without an artificial filter.

In the outpatient consultation, newly discovered kidney diseases are clarified in detail and treatment suggestions are made for the treating GPs. Patients with impaired kidney function are also treated in this consultation. This treatment is usually carried out in collaboration with the GPs.

If there is a progressive deterioration in kidney function and renal replacement therapy becomes necessary, preparations are also made in this consultation for one of the possible renal replacement therapies (transplantation, abdominal dialysis or hemodialysis). In the inpatient area, we also deal with the detection and treatment of chronic and acute kidney diseases.

Patients who cannot undergo a transplant can undergo abdominal or hemodialysis as a kidney replacement procedure. In the case of abdominal dialysis, patients are followed up approximately once a month in the CAPD consultation hour if things go well. For hemodialysis, patients usually have to come to the hospital three times a week for three to four hours.

Not only the clarifications before a possible transplant, but also the immediate post-operative care of kidney transplant patients is carried out by our department.

We take special care of the medication required to ensure that a new organ is not rejected. We are supported by our surgical colleagues who take care of wound healing and any complications of the draining urinary tract.

All kidney transplant patients require lifelong medical care. This takes place in the transplant consultation hours. All patients who have undergone a transplant in Basel are followed up here for the first 6 months. During this time, we try to work out an optimal treatment regimen for each patient individually. If there are no complications, patients who do not come from our region can continue to be cared for by their referring nephrologist.

This consultation provides gynecological and nephrological care for patients suffering from kidney disease or newly discovered kidney disease during and shortly after pregnancy.

Ihre Nierensteinsprechstunde für präzise Diagnostik und nachhaltige Nachsorge

Hatten Sie bereits eine Nierenkolik? Diese sind äusserst schmerzhaft, ein Rückfall ist keine Seltenheit und das Wohlbefinden ist dabei massiv eingeschränkt. Möglicherweise wurde bei Ihnen auch ein Stein operativ entfernt.

Es gibt verschiedene Arten von Nierensteinen mit spezifischen Entstehungsmechanismen. In unserer Nierensteinsprechstunde konzentrieren wir uns nicht auf das akute Ereignis (Nierensteinkolik), sondern auf das «Warum»: wir finden heraus, warum ihr Stoffwechsel Nierensteine bildet, und helfen Ihnen, die Entstehung von Nierensteinen und Nierenkoliken zu verhindern.

Die erfolgreiche Behandlung von Nierensteinen erfordert eine spezialisierte Abklärung zur Ursachenforschung und eine individuelle Beratung für eine effektive Rückfallprävention (Metaphylaxe). Meist ist dabei eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit der Urologie, Radiologie und Ernährungsberatung notwendig, um der Ursache auf den Grund zu gehen.

Wann sollten Sie einen Termin mit uns vereinbaren?

• Wenn Sie wiederholt Nierensteine hatten.

• Wenn eine familiäre Belastung bekannt ist
• Wenn Begleiterkrankungen (wie zum Beispiel chronische Darmerkrankung oder ein Zustand nach Darmoperation, eingeschränkte Nierenfunktion, metabolisches Syndrom, rezidivieren Harninfektionen) bestehen.
